Unusual feeding behaviour and habitat use by koaro
نویسنده
چکیده
Large koaro (Galaxias brevipinnis) were observed drift-feeding in the water column and from the surface in a pool in Cave Brook, a tributary of Big River draining the Gouland Downs, Kahurangi National Park, an area free of introduced trout. This contrasts with the habitat commonly perceived as being koaro habitat which are cascades and fast, boulder riffles. It is suggested that sampling limitations of electrofishing may have given a misleading impression of the habitats occupied by this species in the past, and this may have been exacerbated by the presence of trout. The drift-feeding behaviour and pool habitat use exhibited by koaro is similar to that of introduced trout. Where trout have invaded koaro habitat, predation and competitive displacement of koaro by trout seems highly likely.

Habitat loss through disruption of constrained dispersal networks.
Large losses of habitat could be caused by land use change that disrupts the dispersal networks used by migratory species. We assessed the relative losses of habitat for diadromous fish (i.e., those migrating between sea and freshwater) due to physical barriers, degradation of migratory passage associated with catchment land use, and site-scale land use characteristics on the West Coast, South ...
متن کاملForaging behaviour of non-breeding Western Sandpipers Calidris mauri as a function of sex, habitat and flocking
Individuals within a population may vary considerably in the way they exploit available food resources. If the sexes differ in the size of their feeding apparatus, there can be differences in foraging behaviour and habitat use, hence one sex may be more susceptible to competition. We examined relationships between sexual dimorphism in bill size and foraging behaviour, and habitat and microhabit...
متن کاملOntogenetic changes in foraging behaviour and habitat use by the Oregon garter snake, Thamnophis atratus hydrophilus
Foraging behaviour, stream habitat use and food habits of a population of the aquatic, Oregon garter snake were studied in the field during the spring and summer of 1987 and 1988. Continuous records of behaviour and habitat use were obtained for each snake. Adults foraged more actively and in a wider variety of stream habitats than juveniles or neonates. Adults also fed on a wider variety of pr...
متن کاملEffects of Feeding Buckets Number Per Pen on Performance and Behaviour Indicators of Lambs
Twenty-four 35-day-old lambs were distributed to a completely randomized design with 3 treatments to study the effects of number of feeding buckets per pen on performance, haematology and behaviour indicators. Treatments consisted of 8 (T1), 4 (T2) or 2 (T3) feeding buckets/pen (8 lambs/pen). During the experiment, concentrate was fed at 08:30 in individual feeders. Daily dry matter intake (DMI...
